Mille Lacs County Historical Society Depot Museum Historical & Museum / Friday, June 17th, 2016 View this post on Instagram Heading out of #Princeton, one of the places I knew I wanted to see before leaving was the #MilleLacs County #HistoricalSociety #Depot #Museum. Two reasons, The #GreatNorthern Depot is part of it and also, the first #school house in the #county resides there. A former passenger and #freight depot on the Great #Northern #Railway, #Princeton has a long history of #railroads. #History lesson: the Great Northern Railway originally didn’t go through Princeton, it ran from Minneapolis through Elk River and then up to St. Cloud. Great Northern tycoon, James J. Hill, urged local business owners to take the line through Princeton, thus creating the Elk River-Milaca line. If you stop into the museum, you can go out back (ask the historical society for keys) and see a a 1963 #Milwaukee Road insulated #boxcar, a 1925 Wooden Milwaukee Road boxcar, a 1963 #Burlington Northern wide-vision steel #caboose, and a 1963 Great Northern flat #car used for #concerts in the #summer. As for the schoolhouse? It is the 1856 "District 1" one-room schoolhouse, the first school in Mille Lacs County. Follow along by checking out #MNBucketListRoadTrip and #InntoWin.
