On days like today, filled with gloomy, cool wind and rain, comfort food and warm lighting are necessities. This is where a place like The Salt Cellar comes in. Always beautiful and full of history and elegance, the supper-club-esque restaurant adds a bit of “new” to the “old” Cathedral Hill neighborhood in St Paul. Owned by Joe Kasel and Kevin Geisen, who also own Eagle Street Grille, the Cellar fits its moniker. Dark but beautifully lit, the place seems to be beaming with pride from Chef Alan Bergo, who is a pupil of Lenny Russo, chef/owner of the Heartland restaurant. The menu is a mix of seafood, steak and ingredients that change to follow seasonality. People rave about the Parker House rolls, the amuse bouche, salmon gravlax and the Cesar salad that’s prepared right at the table. I actually loved the rink side seats in the dining room where you can see sausage and bread being made right in front of you. While it is a more expensive – lending to the special occasion only ambiance, it is also somewhere you can grab a summer (or traditional) hand-crafted drink and simply sit with your friends and talk all night – or at least, that’s what we did.
