I got to cross off Theater Latté Da’s immaculate production of Sweeney Todd from the #mnbucketlist last night. It played to a sold out house at the historic Ritz Theater in northeast Minneapolis. With truffle parmesan popcorn and Dogwood coffee in hand, I watched breathlessly as one of my favorite gore musicals literally came to life. Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street and his brilliant counterpart Mrs. Lovett, two of my favorite slighted villains in history, were unbelievable. And it wasn’t just the characters either. The acoustics alone would have had me singing praises (I know, bad pun). But seriously, every piece, from set to costume to the fateful displays of perfectly timed executions – spectacular. Fun side note, it has been so popular that even the cast of Guthrie’s The Events happened to be in the audience as well. The show is running through November 1st and if you get the chance, run – don’t walk – to get tickets.
