I headed to Duluth this weekend with the hope of seeing the World’s Largest Rubber Duck (I’ll show you that later) but also to see the Tall Ships on Lake Superior. A festival in Duluth, it showcases some of the most beautifully cared for ships, like this one. When and If, a 63ft Alden schooner commissioned by General George S. Patton and built by Pendleton in Wiscasset, Maine. It was kept in the Patton family until the General’s nephew, Neal Ayer, made a gift of the vessel to the Landmark school in Prides Crossing, a place where she had been the centerpiece of a sail training program for dyslexic children. She suffered storm damage and eventually became privately owned. Rebuilt it all her former glory, she passed hands once more to Doug Hazlitt in 2012. An absolute wonder, she glided gracefully over the icy water.
