This MNbucketlist addition has been a fixture in New Ulm for 75 years with one of the most loyal community of patrons in the state. Veigel’s Kaiserhoff, across from the Keisling historic house, serves up authentic German food and, while looking like something out of a Bavarian Oktoberfest, is actually quite welcoming. Purchased In 1938, the Veigel’s first tavern, the original Kaiserhoff, was on First and even though the business started small, the family served many of their current famous dishes like their regionally-acclaimed ribs. The restaurant relocated to the 200 block of Minnesota Street and expanded. They have been around so long that some of the waitresses served at the Kaiserhoff for 37, 41 and 42 years, and a cook, Sally Mielke, was there for 50 years. In 2001, it was named “Official Best Barbecued Ribs in Minnesota” (the Discovery Channel and KARE-TV). More super fun facts about them? John Denver was a loyal customer of Veigel’s Kaiserhoff, ordering 20 plates of the ribs to go when he was visiting his wife, Annie’s family, who was from St. Peter. There are photos on Facebook of Veigel sitting with Al Franken and George Wendt (Norm from “Cheers”) at the Kaiserhoff, too!
